St Albans Town Adventure

You have been accused of a crime you didn’t commit.  The only way to prove your innocence is to find out the identity of the real criminal.

Your Challenge

You were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Unbeknownst to you, a theft of valuable jewelry was stolen from a local museum, and the thief escaped.  They managed to cast the blame onto you and the police arrested you – you are due to be sentenced soon!  Your only hope is to find the name of the real thief.  You believe the name is hidden somewhere in the town – if only you can find it!

Can you use your skills to solve puzzles and clues and find evidence that will clear you – in time?

Using out app, solve clues and work out puzzles to lead you through the game.  It is not easy but the alternative is to eat porridge.  Lots of porridge.  Behind bars.  Time to get going.

This game will normally last around 90 minutes but there is no restrictions on time. You will be able to stop the clock once to take a break.

Local History

St Albans is a historic town in Hertfordshire on the peaceful River Ver. The first settlement here dates back to the 1st century BC when a Celtic tribe built its capital at a place they called Verlamion, which translates as ‘place above the marsh’.

When the Romans invaded Britain in AD 43 they captured the settlement and established a fort beside the river crossing. They gave the fort a Latinised version of the Celtic name and called it Verulamium.

The Roman town was less than two decades old when it was burned to the ground by Queen Boudicca in her AD 61 revolt against Roman rule. Archaeologists have unearthed a layer of black ash left by the burning of the timber buildings. The Romans subdued the revolt and rebuilt the town, gradually replacing the original timber structures with stone buildings.

They made Verulamium into a bustling town with all the accoutrements of a civilised Roman settlement, including a forum, a basilica, and an amphitheatre capable of seating 6000 spectators. Verulamium grew to become the third-largest town in Roman Britain, behind only London and Colchester. They encircled the town with stone walls.

The town is named after a 3rd or 4th-century native named Alban, the first recorded Christian martyr in Britain.

Travel Information

St Albans is served well by trains – from London and the Midlands, and there are many buses from local towns, all quite regular.  Parking in St Albans can be difficult during very busy periods and so you may need to park elsewhere and walk back to the start point, or wait for a space to come free.
