You are here to right a wrong. Can you find the name of the real culprit that committed a crime over 1700 years ago? Can you prove that the accused was not guilty? It is now up to you.
A family has traced their family tree all the way back to ancient Rome. They have learnt that a Roman centurion from their family was sentenced for a crime they didn’t commit, over 1700 years ago. Thankfully, the family knows that their ancestor was based right here in Arbeia – you are here to right a wrong. Can you find the name of the real culprit and bring peace to the family? Can you finally solve a crime and free a man who was wrongly convicted? It is up to you – only you can help – and time is of the essence.
CHALLENGE DESCRIPTION
This game will normally last around 90 minutes but there is no restrictions on time. You will be able to stop the clock once to take a break.
Local History
Arbeia was a large Roman fort in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, England, now ruined, and which has been partially reconstructed. It was first excavated in the 1870s and all modern buildings on the site were cleared in the 1970s. Through the course of history of Arbeia, the fort has had several guises, from a busy cosmopolitan port to being the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus’s HQ for a Scottish invasion. It was a huge supply base for the Roman army, having hosted 600 Roman troops, and is said to be the birthplace of the Northumbrian King Oswin.

Travel Information
Arbeia can be reached by car, bus, train and metro. Both South Tyneside and South Shields stations are less than 20 minutes walk away from the fort. The nearest bus stop is just 4 minutes away. On street parking is available although there is a nearby school where parking is not allowed near at certain tiles of the day. There is no parking on site.
